Spending too much can lead to an awkward situation, and spending too little can also leave you red-faced. If you’re celebrating Christmas with the new love of your life, here’s some advice on buying gifts.
How much is too much?
It really depends how long you have been together and what stage you’re at in your relationship. If you’ve been together less than two months, you probably shouldn’t spend more than between £25 and £30 on a gift, but that also depends on your financial situation and whether or not you’re buying for children. For that price you could buy them a DVD boxset, a nice piece of clothing or some jewellery.
If you’ve been together between two and six months, it might be worth pushing the boat out a little more and spending between £30 and £45. That could mean buying slightly more expensive jewellery or something for the home and garden.
If you’ve been together a year or more, then you could raise the budget to £50 and over without it seeming like you’re investing too much in the relationship. After a year, you probably both feel it’s a well-established partnering and gifts such as perfume, high-end clothing and more expensive jewellery feel natural.
How much is too little?
You can’t really put a price on love and romance, and as clichéd as it sounds, it’s always the thought that counts more than the price tag. The amount you spend will always depend on how much disposable income you have, how comfortable you are with one another and how many other people you have to factor in when it comes to buying gifts.
There’s no such thing as ‘spending too little’ if you get them something they really love. So rather than concentrating on the monetary value of your gift to them, think about what will really make your partner happy.
Christmas is about so much more than what you give and receive presents-wise. This is a time to spend precious moments with those you love most, however long you have been together. Now’s the time to start thinking and planning the day, but however you choose to celebrate, we hope you have a wonderful time!
