Sometimes it’s hard to know whether or not you’re ready to go searching for, and settle down with, The One. But there are a few points that suggest you’re in the right place to find that real and lasting relationship with the right person. Reflect on the points below, and trust your heart – if you feel ready, go ahead and jump in!

1. You’ve invested in and are happy with yourself

Being content within yourself is the most important step towards happiness, and it’s essential before you add another person to the mix. Enjoy your independence so that when you seek out a relationship it will be to enrich your life, not because you believe it’s the only thing that can make you happy. Make sure you pursue your hobbies and passions, practise your faith in a way that fulfils you, and are comfortable with your own self-worth so that you can find a partner who truly understands and appreciates every part of you.

2. You’re over any previous relationships

Bringing baggage from past relationships is a quick and easy way to damage new ones. Reflect on your past partners, understand and accept any disappointments or disagreements so that you can learn from them – but make sure those lessons are the only things you carry with you. If you’re still dwelling on a breakup it will be almost impossible to see potential new partners with clear eyes, and any lingering resentment or sadness may blind you to making the same mistakes again. When you’ve made your peace with the past, you’re ready to move on.

3. You aren’t afraid to communicate what you want

When you’re happy with yourself and have learnt from any romantic issues in your past, you’ll have a far better idea of what you want in a relationship. Now it’s time to make sure you can communicate that to other people in your life. Don’t be afraid to stand up for your beliefs and explain what you need from other people, but be open to hearing their desires and needs too. A real relationship consists of two people who fulfil each other because they both want to make the other’s life better. Being able to communicate what you need from a partner, and listening when they tell you in return, will give you a solid foundation for a real, long-lasting relationship.
